Makhachev meets Topuria: “We will fight for number one”
The Russian stated that Topuria’s No.1 position in the pound-for-pound rankings “is just marketing” and that they will fight for it - maybe next year.
The fight between Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev is a step closer to becoming a reality. At least, that’s the impression given off by the Russian fighter from what he said at the last edition of UFC Fight Night.
Watch this space, says Makhachev
Makhachev was asked about his fall to number two in the pound-for-pound rankings to the detriment of the Spanish-Georgian: “It’s marketing," was his reply. “They’re doing it on purpose to promote the fight. People are already interested in him. So they’re doing it well, and we’ll fight for the number one spot in the rankings...”
It’s the strongest hint that the fight that both fans and even Dana White himself want to see, will happen.
However, the two fighters’ paths are not expected to cross until at least 2026. Everything indicates that Makhachev will face Della Maddalena in the coming months for the welterweight belt.
On the other hand, after winning the lightweight title, Topuria could face Arman Tsarukyan or Puddy Pimblett in the ring.
Whatever happens, what’s clear is that the fight between Topuria and Makhachev will happen. The only thing left to decide is when and where it will take place.
