Masters 2022: players, favorites, and absences

On Thursday, April 7, the 2022 Masters tournament begins at Augusta National at 8 a.m. ET. This exclusive tournament is the only golf tournament held at the same place every year and marks the first tournament of the year. This year is the 86th edition of the famous tournament.

This year, there are 91 players from 20 different countries participating in the tournament. Amongst them is the infamous Tiger Woods, who was recently in a bad car accident that left him certain he’d never play professionally again. He’s made a successful recovery though and will grace us with his presence again at this year’s Masters after all!

Notable absentees from 2022 Masters

Of all the talent this year offers, there are still several notable names missing from that list.

Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson is 51 years old and a six-time Major champion and three-time Masters champion. He won’t be participating in this year’s, saying he is taking a break from the game.

Jason Day

Jason Day has moved down in the rankings to fall outside the top 100. Back in 2011, he tied for second place in the Masters and in 2013, placed third.

Martin Kaymer

Martin Kaymer is a former World Number 1 golfer after winning the PGA Championship in 2010. He won another major at the 2014 US Open. Though he played in every Masters from 2008 until 2019, he hasn’t had much success in Augusta, his best result 16th place in 2017.

Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter has played in the Masters 16 times with three top-10 finishes, but this year, he didn’t make it into the world’s top-50 which he needed to get in. He currently ranks 67th.

Henrik Stenson

This will be Henrik Stenson’s first time missing the Masters since 2005. His best result was a tie for fifth place in 2018. This year, however, he’s bumped down to 232nd place on the Official World Golf Ranking.

Matt Kuchar

Matt Kuchar has been at every Masters tournament since 2010 and has won nine PGA Tours. He had four top-ten finishes and tied for third in 2012. He’s been struggling recently though, cropping to 148th on the Official World Golf Ranking.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler has finished the Masters in the top 10 three different times and in 2018, he was the runner-up, just one shot behind winner Patrick Reed. He’s also started to struggle recently though, stopping to 122 on the Official World Golf Ranking

Who is favored to win the 2022 Masters?

Tiger Woods is back in action and ready to fight for the title, but he’s got some strong competition. Jon Rahm, the reigning US Open champion, is the strong favorite to win the 2022 Masters. The Spaniard made his Masters debut in 2017 and has finished in the top 10 in the last four. After Rahm, opinions tend to differ in order, but more or less, the same 10 golfers are at the top of expert’s radar.
