Update:

Sturla Holm Laegreid, a Norwegian biathlete, admitted to cheating on his girlfriend in an interview with NRK, his country’s state broadcaster, immediately after winning the bronze medal in the 20km individual biathlon at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

“My biggest mistake”

“Six months ago I met the love of my life - the most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her,” the 28-year-old explained.

I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”

A confession in front of the world

Holm Laegreid, a six-time Biathlon World Champion, addressed his surprising confession in a press conference later that day.

“Yeah, I haven’t got any reactions from the girl that I mentioned. I’m happy, because maybe she hasn’t seen it. Maybe she will see it at the right time. I hope I don’t make anything worse for her, but maybe it can help. I don’t know. I hope there’s a happy ending. So we will see what time will do.”

“I don’t want to steal the show”

Holm Laegreid also expressed his hope that his admission wouldn’t overshadow the achievement of countryman Johan-Olav Botn, who won the gold medal in the biathlon.

I don’t want to steal the show. I hope this is just like a day-or-two thing. Then you are an Olympic gold medallist forever."
