Update:

The 153rd Open Championship – yes, still the British Open to some – got under way on Thursday at Royal Portrush, and the iconic Claret Jug is back up for grabs. The final men’s major of the year has brought a stacked field to the rugged north coast of Northern Ireland, where defending champion Xander Schauffele leads 155 other hopefuls into one of golf’s sternest tests.

Welcome to The Open 2025

Royal Portrush, hosting The Open for just the third time and first since 2019, is widely regarded as one of the best links courses in the world. And if the crowds match those of five years ago, when Shane Lowry won in a wave of Irish euphoria, expect a lively four days from tee to green... and pub to pub.

Rory McIlroy is under intense scrutiny once again. The Northern Irishman returns to home soil as a five-time major winner, fresh off his dramatic Masters triumph in April. He’ll be hoping to avoid a repeat of 2019, when an opening-hole disaster ended in a missed cut and collective heartbreak.

The 2025 Open Day 2: notable groups to follow

The marquee group of Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood (5:09 a.m. ET) headlines the early wave. Just ahead of them, Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland (4:58 a.m. ET) continue what may be the most talented, if unpredictable, trio in the field.

Robert MacIntyre, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Rose (4:47 a.m. ET) will also look to assert themselves, while defending champ Xander Schauffele tees off at 9:59 a.m. ET with Jon Rahm and J.J. Spaun in a group brimming with major pedigree.

Also keep an eye on Shane Lowry, Scottie Scheffler, and Collin Morikawa (10:10 a.m. ET). If Thursday’s fans were any indication, Lowry will once again have the loudest following of the week.

Let’s take a look at all the tee times for Day 1.
