Rafa Nadal will play in the Cincinnati Masters 1000

The Spanish superstar announced his return into action at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati after his Wimbledon withdrawal.

Fans attending the Cincinnati Masters 1000 next week received great news, as Rafa Nadal announced he will play in Cincinnati ahead of the US Open in New York at the end of the month.

It will be his first competitive appearance in over a month when he decided not to play in the Wimbledon semifinals against Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury suffered in his quarterfinals match vs. American Taylor Fritz.

“Very happy to play again in Cincy. Flying there tomorrow,” the 36-year-old wrote on Instagram.

A stellar season despite his injuries

Nadal has had a long history of injuries during his career and this season was no different. He faced injury issues a few months ago when a cracked rib forced him off the courts for the whole of April and he skipped this week’s Montreal Masters to aid his injury recovery.

However, the Spaniard, who has won the Australian and French Open titles this year to take his Grand Slam tournament total to a record 22.

The 2013 Cincinnati champion (22-11 at the ATP Masters 1000 event) has not competed at the hard-court showcase since 2017 when he lost to Kyrgios in the quarters.

The current World No. 3, who has won 36 Masters 1000 titles, will try to win his fifth trophy of 2022 and improve upon his 35-3 record this year.
