Rising PGA Tour star Chris Gotterup following in the footsteps of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Justin Thomas
In his second season on the PGA Tour, Gotterup has already won two events after his victory at the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open.

Chris Gotterup has made a big impression in a short space of time since making his PGA Tour debut in 2024, winning his maiden event at the Myrtle Beach Classic in May last year. And the 25-year-old has now registered the biggest victory of his career to date at the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, seeing off superstars such as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.
Yet any success that comes his way shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. As a college golfer at Rutgers University and then the University of Oklahoma, he was rated as one of the United States’ top future prospects, and won awards that reflected that.
Woods, Mickelson, JT, Gotterup...
In 2022, Gotterup won the Jack Nicklaus Award, which recognizes the national player of the year at the Division I, II, III, NAIA, and NJCAA levels. The Maryland native followed the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm in receiving the prize for Division I college golfers.
That same year, Gotterup also received the Haskins Award, a separate prize honoring the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States. Woods, Mickelson and Thomas are among the previous recipients of that prize too, along with other elite-level stars such as two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, putting guru Brad Faxon and former world No. 1 Luke Donald.
Gotterup’s major potential
To date, Gotterup has only participated in three major championships, with his best finish being a T23 at the US Open this year. He may not be one of the PGA Tour’s biggest names just yet, but his college career certainly suggests he has the potential to get there.
