For those who were eagerly awaiting another meeting between Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChamabeau, the wait will not belong as the two are now set to face off in a four-player match that will also feature another two of the game’s best players.

‘The Match’ will feature golf’s best in December

There is no doubt that golf fans are excited about the prospect of this year’s edition of ‘The Match.’ Indeed, the made-for-TV event will be staged in December 2024 and will feature what can only be described as a star-studded field. Set to be played on a course in Las Vegas, the four-player match will feature recent U.S. Open duelists Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau, along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, and Brooks Koepka.

Needless to say, with both DeChambeau and Koepka currently playing in LIV Golf and McIlroy and Scheffler competing in the PGA, the event brings with it an added layer of intrigue as players from the Saudi-backed league are not currently permitted to play in PGA Tour events. What that means is that fans of the game are about to witness a very special tournament in which four players who have won 13 major championships between them will battle for supremacy.

According to reports, the event will be broadcasted by TNT - the network has been the base of ‘The Match’ franchise for some time - but no further details have been given at this time. That said, one player has already made his excitement known. Speaking with Golfweek, McIlroy was open about his anticipation. “I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” McIlroy said. “This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans. We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”

It’s worth noting that ‘The Match’ will in fact require some form of media release from the PGA Tour and those the organization has yet to make such a move, the general expectation is that it will do so. As for the players themselves, while cliches abound, there is no overstating the potential for a sensational event. Where Scheffler is concerned, the young American is currently in the form of his life having won seven times on Tour this year including victories in the Masters back in April as well as the FedEx Cup this past Sunday. Where DeChambeau is concerned, fans will have no trouble recalling the manner in which he narrowly beat McIlroy at the U.S. Open on the final hole. As for the Northern Irishman, while he does have three wins to his name this year, he has not won a major title in 10 years i.e., expect him to be firing on all cylinders. That of course brings us to Koepka whose 2024 has been relatively subdued, though he has come out on top in two LIV Golf events in the follow-on from his PGA Championship win last year.
