Ryan Garcia agrees to fight ‘Rolly’ Romero

Garcia wants to bounce back from his painful defeat to Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero is set to be his next opponent.

Ryan Garcia seems ready to move on and keep progressing in his career despite suffering his first loss as a professional against Gervonta Davis in April.

After the fight, KingRy was asked if he planned to stay at 135 lbs or go up to his natural weight, at 140 lbs, and Garcia had little doubt about it, stating his next fight would be at super lightweight.

Now, Garcia has taken to social media to announce that he accepted a title shot offered by fellow countryman Rolando Romero for his WBA belt.

It could be a strategic fight for Garcia, who will likely get a nice paycheck to fight Rolly and in case of getting his hand raised and winning the belt, he could ask for a rematch with Tank.

It’s also a fight that makes sense for Oscar de la Hoya’s fighter, as Romero is seen as the weakest 140 lbs champion (Regis Prograis, Subriel Matias, and Josh Taylor), so Garcia could have the possibility of winning a belt even after suffering a clear defeat, which is an uncommon scenario.

Rolly, who had been asking for the fight with Garcia for months, immediately called out Derrick James’ pupil after winning the vacant WBA title with a ninth-round knockout victory over Ismael Barroso this month.

Romero, who also tasted defeat against Davis, is interested in fighting Garcia because it’s a fight that can generate a big revenue and because he saw Garcia’s flaws during the fight against Gervonta and believes he can take advantage of them.
