After becoming embroiled in a doping scandal following his fight against Devin Haney (31-1), Ryan Garcia (25-1) looks to have set foot inside the ring for the last time, claiming he is hanging up his gloves.
What did Garcia say about retiring?
Via his X account, the 25-year-old announced his retirement from professional boxing with a straightforward message, “I am officially retired,” which followed a series of seemingly related posts.
“Y’all may catch me out and about but as far as boxing, I don’t know. There is so much corruption, I’m over it. I may do acting or singing. I’ll still be training but I’m hurt and done with it and everyone. The sad part is I’m a great boxer. And I entertain and knock people out. I’m sad because I love boxing. Praying for everyone and I hope everyone has a great life.”
What punishment will Garcia receive for positive drug test?
Following his victory over Haney on 20 April, Garcia tested positive for ostarine, a banned performance-enhancing drug. According to journalist Lance Pugmire of Boxing Scene, the New York State Athletic Commission will decide Garcia’s fate this week.
“King Ry” faces being suspended from the sport from anywhere between four months and two years. Additionally, he is likely to be hit with a hefty fine, while his win against Haney looks set to be overturned and recorded as a defeat, rather than just a no-contest.
Garcia’s clash against Haney had initially been for the WBC super lightweight title but became a non-title fight after “The Flash” missed the weight for the bout. Garcia knocked Haney down on three occasions in a majority decision victory, but “The Dream” retained his title.
