Scottie Scheffler’s $50 eBay find: the surprising golf accessory he couldn’t play without

Update:

It appears that Scottie Scheffler isn’t just consistent in his scoring on the course, he’s consistent in everything. From his pre-round warm-ups to the tiny objects he carries in his pocket, the No. 1 player in the world builds his game on habits.

I get it. I’ve had my own lucky golf pencil that survived years in my bag. Lose it, and it’s like someone rearranged my furniture without asking. The wife may even be questioning my irrational mood as i search for a tiny piece of wood-surrounded graphite. For Scheffler, as he revealed at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the loss of his key item came a couple of years ago.

What he wanted wasn’t sold in any pro shop he visited. The newer versions felt wrong in the hand, maybe too light or too flimsy. For someone whose livelihood depends on precision, settling wasn’t an option.

What did Scottie Scheffler need?

The item in question was a simple metal divot-repair tool, once picked up at Cypress Point. The kind no one makes anymore.

“It’s just the right size and it’s metal, so they don’t really make those types of divot tools anymore, so I found one there and I’ve stuck with it.”

Scheffler

Scheffler tracked one down on eBay, paying $50 for the privilege – and using his real name. The seller even slipped in a note for the champ. When he returned to Cypress this year, he bought extras on-site, cheaper this time, to avoid another desperate search.

The story, shared on X by PGA Tour editor Sean Martin, drew the full spectrum of golf-fan reactions – from admiration (“outstanding role model”) to bemusement (“Pitch mark repairers. Fuck’s sake.”). Some hoped to snag one themselves at future events, others just wanted to see a photo.

It turns out even a $50 eBay find from a world number one can stir almost as much debate as a 320-yard drive.
