Scull admits ‘this wasn’t the time’ to fight Canelo Álvarez: who could he fight next?

Although several reports indicate that Canelo Alvarez will relinquish the IBF belt, Cuban William Scull is still keen on fighting the Mexican.

Cuban boxer William Scull is aware that he is an unknown name in the boxing world. That is why he is not surprised that Canelo Álvarez would rather give up his International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt instead of fighting against the islander, say reports.

During an interview he gave to Mexican boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera on his show ‘Un Round Más’, Scull said that maybe it was not yet the right time to face the proposed opponent. However, he is not losing hope of fighting the champion at a later date in his career.

Maybe this wasn’t the time and Canelo said let’s [not fight] the Cuban right now, who is not very well known, and let’s see if he becomes world champion. If he is champion, let’s unify, that’s what I think,” Scull said about Alvarez’s decision.

Scull was respectful to the Mexican boxer, and sorry that the fight could not happen. He also noted that he wishes “it would happen at some point [to fight a boxer like Canelo]” and made it clear that his dream is to win a belt as world champion.

When could Canelo fight next?

Scull is set to be ruled out as an opponent for the Mexican fighter in September, the date in which the Mexican boxer is expected to return to the ring. In spite of this, Canelo knows that he has many options for the fight that would take place during the Mexican national holidays.

William Scull wants to fight Canelo Álvarez.

David Benavidez is the opponent that the World Boxing Council (WBC) has chosen as mandatory, while Edgar Berlanga is the challenger that the World Boxing Association (WBA) has chosen and the other option is Terence Crawford, who is the favourite of the Arab Sheikh Turki Al Sheikh.

For now, however, Álvarez is still enjoying his unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia on May 4, and in the coming months he is expected to confirm his next opponent.
