Taylor Fritz: “There are times where I’m probably overthinking things too much”
The American tennis player opened up in statements to Hard Court after his defeat in the Dallas tournament final against his compatriot Ben Shelton.

American tennis star Taylor Fritz came painfully close to capturing his first title of 2026, falling just short against Ben Shelton in the Dallas final. He then headed to Delray Beach, where he opened with a win over Spain’s Rafa Jódar before bowing out in the quarterfinals to Tommy Paul.
Three defeats in last month’s United Cup
So far, the results simply haven’t lined up for Fritz this season. Through the early stretch of 2026, he’s sitting at nine wins and six losses — three of those defeats coming during the United Cup.

Speaking to Hard Court after his loss in Dallas, Fritz didn’t shy away from self‑criticism, but he also highlighted the mindset that keeps him pushing forward. “It’s always been that way, and I think it’s something my dad instilled in me from a young age,” he said. “I’ve never liked giving up, and when I do, I hate that feeling.”
Fritz admitted that his tendency to fixate on mistakes can sometimes work against him. “Being self‑critical can become a problem. There are moments when I overthink things, and those are usually the times when I’m not playing my best.”

Fritz to enter the second round at Indian Wells
Now, he’s looking to reset before the U.S. swing — Indian Wells, his home tournament in California, followed by Miami — hoping to rediscover the level that made him one of the top American contenders on tour.
