The perfect farewell for Dustin Poirier

The ‘Diamond’ will walk away from professional MMA on his own terms—at home, in peak physical condition, and in a major fight against an elite opponent. A fitting end to a career that only lacked a title.

Update:

Dustin Poirier (30-9-1) will finally get his long-dreamed-of retirement fight. The ‘Diamond’ is set to face Max Holloway on July 19 at UFC 318 in New Orleans, the heart of the state that gave birth to one of the greatest legends in MMA history.

After a long internal struggle over whether to continue or call it a career, Poirier made the decision to mount one last charge at the throne. His spectacular victory over Benoit Saint-Denis proved he was still among the very best. He went straight for the title, challenging Islam Makhachev. Although he came up short, he left behind a memorable 23-minute war against the division’s most dominant force.

Despite having once held an interim title, Poirier will leave his gloves in the center of the Octagon without ever capturing the undisputed belt. He tried three times, each time falling to an all-time great: Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and Islam Makhachev. Justin Gaethje also denied him the unofficial BMF title, which will once again be on the line when he faces Max Holloway.

Poirier an example to us all

A fighter to his core, with the heart of a lion, Poirier has spent his life swimming upstream and overcoming adversity. Raised in a rough and troubled environment, it was boxing and his love for the fight game that pulled him off the streets and helped turn him into a figure idolized by thousands of fans.
