Update:

For the first time in history since the establishment of boxing’s four major sanctioning bodies (WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF), the heavyweight division is set to be unified. Oleksandr Usyk (23-0-0, 14 KOs) will attempt to become the undisputed world champion once again when he faces Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium this Saturday, July 19.

Dubois will also be defending the IBF title he won against Anthony Joshua in September 2024. Notably, his last defeat came at the hands of Usyk.

From ball to ring: Usyk’s life and career so far

Like many fighters, Usyk began his athletic journey playing soccer, the dominant sport across Europe. He was a passionate fan of the Argentine league and idolized Lionel Messi. But at age 15, he gave boxing a try - and never looked back. Despite switching sports, he remains a devoted soccer fan and often watches matches during training.

Usyk compiled an impressive amateur record with 350 fights and represented Ukraine at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, winning gold in the heavyweight division in London.

After his Olympic triumph, Usyk turned professional in November 2013. He racked up nine straight stoppage wins - eight in Ukraine and one in Germany. In October 2014, he claimed the WBO Intercontinental cruiserweight title and held it for a year before capturing the full WBO belt in Poland. He went on to unify the cruiserweight division, becoming the undisputed champion, and later repeated the feat at heavyweight.

Usyk defeated Joshua (28-3-0, 25 KOs) in the U.K. by unanimous decision to take his titles in 2021, and then beat him again in a split decision in their rematch in Saudi Arabia.
