Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama is the favourite to triumph at the 2025 Sony Open, coming off the back of a record-breaking win at The Sentry last week. Matsuyama shot a round of 35-under on Sunday in Kapalua, Hawaii, the lowest-ever 72-hole score in PGA Tour history.

The 32-year-old is expected to lead the field at the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now the world No 5, Matsuyama is the top-ranked golfer at the tournament and is clearly a man in form.

He won this tournament previously, back in 2022, with a total score of 23-under. He beat Henry Russell on a playoff to clinch the $1.35 million winners' share. There are 144 golfers set to compete in the 2025 edition; here’s a look at some of the names that could challenge Matsuyama for the title at the start of the 2025 PGA Tour...

Second in the running on most betting sites, Corey Conners showed little signs of rust at The Sentry tournament last week. Conners carded scores in the 60s for all four rounds to bag a place in the top five.

The Canadian already has two PGA Tour wins to his name, the Valero Open in 2019 and 2023. Crucially, Conners was unerringly consistent last year. He made the cut in all of the 24 events that he took part in during 2024 and made the top ten on four occasions.

The 22-year-old South Korean has already enjoyed three wins on the PGA Tour and looks ready to become a regular challenger at tour events. He missed the cut in his only previous appearance at the Sony Open in 2023 but has undoubtedly rounded out his game since them, finding greater consistency.

In his last five tournaments, Kim has finished in the top ten three times. He’s made the cut in three of the last five tournaments that he has attended and is a good bet to challenge in Hawaii this week.

Perhaps the most well-known of the competitors at the Sony Open, Bradley is set for a big year in 2025. Last July he was named as the Team USA Ryder Cup captain for 2025 and will be eager to start the year on a positive note.

He has seven PGA Tour victories to his name and won the PGA Championship in 2011, his only major win to date. Shortly after that he broke into the world top ten but has never been ranked higher than tenth. The 38-year-old finished second at the Sony Open in 2024 with an impressive 27-under across the weekend. He’ll be hoping to go one better this time around.

Currently ranked 13th in the world, Theegala is just one place behind Bradley and the third-highest ranked player in the tournament. The 27-year-old California native has just one PGA Tour win to his name but has been a consistent performer in recent years.

Speaking ahead of the 2025 opener at The Sentry, Theegala outlined his goals for the upcoming season: “I want to make the Ryder Cup team, so that’s probably my one big one. In a weird way, you know what you need to do in golf. Whether the results pan out or not, its not really up to you sometimes, it’s up to the golf Gods. All you can do is put in the work and do the right things.” With big ambitions, Theegala will be eager to start out his 2025 on a positive footing in Honolulu this week.
