Success, fame, glory, massive endorsement deals. For years, Tiger Woods had it all. He was more than a champion golfer. He was a global icon and a role model for millions.

But much of that image unraveled over time. While nothing can erase his 15 major titles or his place among the greatest golfers ever, Woods’ public reputation has repeatedly taken hits due to a series of off-course controversies.

Here is a closer look at the key moments that reshaped his legacy.

2009: The beginning of the downfall

Woods’ troubles began 17 years ago, when his carefully crafted public image collapsed.

Struggling to manage unprecedented fame, he became embroiled in a series of extramarital affairs. The scandal broke in 2009, when his then-wife, Elin Nordegren, discovered the infidelities.

The situation escalated dramatically. Woods crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant outside his Florida home. Reports at the time said Nordegren used a golf club to break a window and pull him from the vehicle.

The fallout was severe. The couple divorced in August 2010, with Woods reportedly paying a $145 million settlement. His reputation collapsed worldwide, marking the first major blow to his public image.

2017: Prescription drug arrest

Years of injuries took a toll on Woods’ body, and eventually, on his reliance on medication.

In 2017, police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car with the engine running in Jupiter, Florida, near his home. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Woods later said the incident was caused by an “unexpected reaction” to prescribed medications. A toxicology report found multiple substances in his system.

He ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving, paid a fine, and completed a diversion program. The case was recorded as a DUI-related offense, raising fresh concerns about his health and decision-making.

2021: A life-threatening crash

The most serious incident of Woods’ life came in 2021.

He lost control of his SUV and crashed, leaving the vehicle severely damaged. Woods suffered open fractures to his tibia and fibula and required emergency surgery.

Doctors feared amputation was a real possibility.

“I’m lucky to be alive and still have my leg,” Woods later said.

No charges were filed, but the crash reignited concerns about his physical and emotional state after a period of relative calm off the course.

2025: Lingering physical struggles

The emotional toll of past events, combined with years of injuries, continued to affect Woods physically.

After the 2021 crash left him with significant leg damage, chronic back issues limited his ability to compete at the highest level. The same courses he once dominated became increasingly difficult to navigate.

He underwent multiple procedures, including Achilles tendon surgery and lumbar spine surgery, in an effort to improve his quality of life and remain competitive.

Still, his declining physical condition led to renewed speculation about potential reliance on pain medication.

2026: Another incident behind the wheel

The latest controversy is recent.

Woods was involved in another crash while attempting to pass a truck on a narrow road in Jupiter Island, Florida, the exclusive community where he lives. His vehicle overturned, though he managed to exit on his own through the passenger side door. No one else was injured.

He tested negative for alcohol but refused a drug test, which is a misdemeanor under Florida law.

Woods was held for eight hours before being released on bail. Authorities suspect he may have been driving under the influence of medication or other substances.

He now faces multiple charges, including DUI-related offenses, refusal to submit to testing, and property damage.
