Tony Finau’s comeback on Sunday came at the expense of Scott Piercy and his 4-stroke lead when entering play that day. In a tournament where the highest FedEx Cup ranked player, Hideki Matsuyama, shot a 77 on Thursday and decided to withdraw due to “a sore wrist”, the final win was open for whoever played best on Sunday.

Finau and Pierce, 9 strokes apart on Sunday

Scott Piercy has not won a PGA tournament since 2018, and his T-2 finish at the US Open was six years ago, so when he began to play on Sunday with a 4-stroke lead it seemed like his long awaited fifth professional victory was at last within reach in Minnesota. But you cannot win a tournament when shooting 76 in the final round while your opponents achieve mid-60s scores, such as Finau’s 67 or Hahn’s 65.

Finau had a bogey on the final hole of the TPC Twin Cities, and he still won by three shots, which has made him jump from 30th to 17th in the FedEx Cup ranking, as the world’s best golfers prepare for the final tournaments of the Tour and to crown a new FedEx champion.
