Estados Unidos Update:

American politics has always had a flair for the dramatic, but now the octagon may invade the nation’s capital. UFC President Dana White arrived in Washington with a dazzling proposal: bring the sport’s most famous cage to the South Lawn of the White House. According to The Wall Street Journal, he wasn’t just heard, he was applauded by President Donald Trump himself.

“We did it today,” White celebrated on social media after his meeting in the capital, sounding like he had just won a world championship. But the prize isn’t a gold belt, it’s a place in history: an MMA event in front of the world’s most famous façade, complete with fireworks and laser lights illuminating the Washington Monument.

July 4 ruled out

The event, still in early planning, promises to be unlike anything seen before. A full fight card, featuring men and women, is slated for June 2026 as a lead-in to the nation’s 250th anniversary. The original plan aimed for July 4, but the Independence Day schedule is already too packed.

Fans won’t just be VIPs in suits on the lawn. Giant screens on the Ellipse and surrounding areas will let thousands of spectators watch the fights live, turning Washington into a massive fan festival. Pre-event activities on the National Mall are also planned, including autograph sessions, interactive zones, and even punching bags for tourists to test their strength.

Rumor has it that weigh-ins and press conferences could take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. If UFC is known for anything, it’s showmanship, and Trump, host of the concept, is never one for subtlety.

From the Oval Office to the South Lawn

Early plans suggested fighters might walk from the Oval Office colonnade to a cage in the Rose Garden. But the space proved too small. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump and White want something grand, and the stage will now be the expansive South Lawn. UFC crews have already inspected the grounds.

Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung called it “one of the largest and most historic sporting events ever” and a symbol of the president’s vision for America’s 250th anniversary.

Politics meets sports

Mixing sports and politics isn’t new. Tennis matches in the 1920s hosted by President Warren G. Harding, George W. Bush’s impromptu baseball games on the same lawn, and Barack Obama’s basketball sessions with friends all come to mind. But nothing compares to the scale of what White and Trump are planning.

Trump has long used sports as an extension of his politics, and vice versa. Earlier this year, he became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl in February.

Trump’s long-standing UFC connection

Trump and UFC have a relationship spanning more than two decades. When the organization was fighting for acceptance and labeled a brutal spectacle by politicians like Senator John McCain, the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City welcomed the promotion and gave it a lifeline. White has not forgotten: he has defended Trump at Republican conventions and introduced him at political events as if he were a star fighter.

The connection extends to the family. Ivanka Trump practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu and, according to The Wall Street Journal, joined the early planning meeting by phone.

The timing is remarkable. UFC has just signed a $7.7 billion deal with Paramount and Skydance, preparing to expand to broadcast TV on CBS. Meanwhile, Trump is navigating legal controversies and an election calendar that could make this event a symbolic tool to appeal to younger voters.
