How AI judge will feature in Usyk and Fury rematch
The second heavyweight title fight will be monitored by Artificial Intelligence, but will not influence the official outcome of the fight.
Boxing is evolving, and so is technology, creating opportunities for the two to converge. Turki Al-Sheikh announced on his social media that the highly anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk (22-0-0, 14 KOs) and Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) this Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will feature an AI-powered judge. While the AI will monitor the fight, the final decision will remain in the hands of the three official judges.
“For the first time ever, an AI-powered judge will monitor the fight Free from bias and human error brought to you by The Ring,” shared the Arab sheikh on his X account (formerly Twitter). The pair’s first encounter ended with a split decision victory for the Ukrainian, a result that left much of the audience unconvinced. Many believed Usyk was the clear winner, nearly knocking Fury out during the fight.
AI in boxing
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly present in our daily lives, and now it’s making its way into sports. Boxing, long criticized for “robberies and injustices” in scoring, could benefit from this technology as a fairer way to determine fight outcomes.
“This innovative experiment, which will not affect the official results, debuts during the most important fight of the century,” Turki added.
The AI judge will serve as support, providing analysis but without influencing the official outcome of the bout. The final decision will rest solely in the hands of the human judges. However, this debut could pave the way for governing bodies and promoters to adopt this “fairer tool” in making their final decisions.
