The knockout artist is back in the ring to take on his Ghanaian rival in his first fight at super welterweight.

The first weekend of 2024 will see the return of one of the hottest prospects in boxing, as Vergil Ortiz Jr. will be back in the ring after a long hiatus due to health issues.

The undefeated talent (19-0, 19 KOs) seems to have overcome his rhabdomyolysis problems and has gone up in weight to take on Fredrick Lawson in a 12-round fight at The Theater at Virgin Hotels, in Las Vegas.

Ortiz Jr. was expected to fight the dangerous Eimantas Staniosis, and both men were scheduled to meet in the ring on two occasions, but the American had to withdraw for not being physically ready.

Meanwhile, Lawson’s last fight took place in April, when he got his hand raised against Estevan Villalobos after winning a unanimous decision.

Ortiz Jr. is a massive favorite to have a winning return against the older Lawson.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Dallas native is the -2400 favorite, while the African fighter is the +1140 underdog.

Given that Ortiz is heavily favored to get the win, some other markets could offer more value.

Vergil Ortiz vs Fredrick Lawson: prediction

Ortiz Jr. hasn’t tasted defeat as a professional, and his record is one of the best in the sport, winning all of his fights by KO.

However, he has moved up in weight and his punches may not be as deadly as they used to be at welterweight. His opponents will also be bigger and stronger, which means they could surprise him with a good shot and send him to the canvas.

Ortiz Jr, though, has shown a great chin so far and his rival, Lawson, is only 3-2 in his last five fights. While lots of action is expected when both men meet in the ring, Ortiz Jr. will likely be the winner of the contest, probably adding a 20th knockout to his record.
