The stage is set for a showdown between Team USA and Team Europe in this 18th edition of the prestigious tournament. With the best women in golf on show, there is no doubt that were in for a spectacle as Team Europe attempts to defend its title.

What is the Solheim Cup?

A biennial golf tournament for professional women golfers, the Solheim Cup is contested by teams representing Europe and the United States. The tournament itself is named after the Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim, who was a central figure in its creation. First held in 1990, the tournament changed to being staged in even-numbered years from 2002 as it alternated with the men’s equivalent, the Ryder Cup. There was of course another reshuffle following the 2020 global pandemic. Where titles are concerned, the United States has won 10 cups, while Europe has won 7, though the Europeans are in fact the current champions having won at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, in 2021.

2023 Solheim Cup: The lay of the land

As mentioned above, Team Europe is the defending champion, and playing on home soil will undoubtedly present a serious challenge for Team USA. Indeed, the European team is quite frankly loaded with talent. On the other hand, Team USA will be looking to the likes of world No. 3 Nelly Korda to upset the status quo. With that said, both teams will be subjected to an additional obstacle i.e., Day 1 will feature one of the hardest formats in golf, the foursome format. The fourballs will of course be played in the afternoon, while the foursomes will tee off in the morning. To be clear, the foursomes will tee off with 12-minute intervals and will begin at 8:10 a.m. local time (2:10 a.m. ET), and the fourball matches will start at 1:40 p.m. local time (7:40 a.m. ET).
