Update:

The Memorial Park Municipal Golf Course in Houston, Texas is playing host to some of the biggest names in golf this weekend. The likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are competing for the Texas Children’s Houston Open, with a $9.5 million prize fund up for grabs.

The Day Two action on Friday was curtailed by inclement weather as thunderstorms and lightening in the area forced officials to suspend play. But despite warnings of “a dangerous weather situation” in the area the PGA Tour has indicated that play will resume later on Friday with the all-important cut coming up at the culmination of the day’s action.

As it stands at 5:35pm (ET) on Friday afternoon, the projected cut line is set at -2. With tough conditions affecting players, simply breaking even on Day Two looks like a real challenge.

Who is the favorite for the Texas Children’s Houston Open?

Ahead of the weekend’s action, Scheffler and McIlroy were the two stand-out candidates to triumph in Houston but the picture has changed dramatically after the first day and a half of play. At the point of the weather suspension, Scheffler was leading the pack on -11 with a one-shot lead over Taylor Pendrith.

Things were not going so well for McIlroy, who was languishing at 68th in the leaderboard with a combined score of -1. He shot 70 in the first round and finds himself with work to do to make the cut and avoid a shock early exit.

Speaking after a slow start in Day One, McIlroy described it as a “pedestrian” performance and he admitted that he’ll need to up the ace on Friday to lever himself back into contention.

A little pedestrian I guess is a good way to describe it... Made a few par saves early on that I needed to and then had quite a few chances on the second nine there that I didn’t convert,” McIlroy explained. “Sort of tale of two halves. I felt like I was scrambling for the most part on the first nine and then I feel like I left a couple out there on the last nine.”
