Carlos Alcaraz will be attempting to add another notch to his growing list of honors this week as he takes on Taylor Fritz in the Japan Open final.
The world number one is basking in what has been another highly productive year - so far he has won two Grand Slams (Roland Garros and the US Open) alongside victories at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Italian Open and Cincinnati Open - three tournaments that he won for the first time.
Alcaraz eyeing first Japan Open title
The Spaniard aims to add the Japan Open title to that haul, and log his third title on hard court this year - a surface he has tended to struggle on, compared to grass and clay.
He will be up against a player who knows all about winning in Tokyo. Taylor Fritz lifted the trophy in 2022, beating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Fritz sits four places below Alcaraz in the ATP ranking in fifth having lifted the Stuttgart Open and Eastbourne Open titles in June and the Laver Cup with Team World earlier this month - in which he beat Alcaraz in straight sets 3–6, 2–6.
Taylor won their most recent encounter but Charly won all of the previous three - this year’s Wimbledon semi-final, last year in the Laver Cup and their first clash at the 2023 ATP Masters 1000 Miami. And who knows, maybe they will meet again at next month’s Six Kings Slam 2025 in Riyadh.
