What weight classes are there in the UFC and which one are Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill in?
UFC 300 is edging closer and Pereira and Hill will be looking to put on a show in the main event. But in what division are they fighting?
The time many fight fans had been waiting for so long is about to come. UFC 300 will be held this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, in Vegas, in what many consider the biggest UFC event ever.
There’s so much expectation surrounding the card because there are many great fighters. Alex Pereira, Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and Deiveson Figueiredo are some of the many big names that will compete at UFC 300.
There will be three titles on the line, one of them being the BMF belt, a non-official title created in 2019 for a fight between two of the nastiest fighters by that time, Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.
“When you look at UFC 300 right, we have 12 current and former UFC champions or interim champions, seven pound-for-pound [ranked] fighters, almost every single fight features a ranked contender, and 16 ranked fighters in total”, UFC president Dana White recently said.
“So, UFC 300 is the greatest combat sports card ever assembled”, he added.
UFC: weight divisions
The UFC has changed a lot since its early days. There were no weight divisions when the organization was founded and the first events were organized. Mixed martial artists fought with massive differences in weight.
In 1997, after threats of being banned from the sport, the UFC started creating weight classes, a first step to a modernization that translated into a revolution in the MMA world. That helped the promotion create its first stars, as fighters got more professional.
There are currently nine weight classes, from flyweight to heavyweight, although there will be fights in only six divisions at UFC 300.
Which weight class are Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill in?
The main event will see Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill going to war. The Brazilian is the favorite to come out on top, but Hill’s good performances in the promotion give him a good shot at pulling off the upset.
Both men will meet in the octagon in a light heavyweight title fight. Pereira is the champion, while the American is the No. 1 contender in the division.
Pereira or Hill could fight the winner of the Jiri Prochazka-Aleksandar Rakic clash, which is the other light heavyweight fight of the night. The Czech warrior is the second-ranked fighter in the category, while Rakic is the No. 5.
