Coco Gauff is safely through to the third round at Wimbledon 2024 after defeating Romanian Anca Todoni 6-2, 6-1 in what was a mirror of her victory in round one.

A comfortable 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow American Caroline Dolehide came on Centre Court on Monday, the opening day of The Championships, before the number 2 seed breezed past Todoni in round two.

She will now play Sonay Kartal in round three after the world number 298 shone in what was the biggest win of her career with victory over France’s Clara Burel.

Coco cruises through to round three

A total of 66 minutes was all it took for Coco to crush her Romanian opponent, with the American continuing to convince every time she steps out onto the court. “Overall, I just learned about life a lot. I guess you do as you get older,” she said after the match.

“I realised what I do, yes I’m passionate about, but it’s not that serious and sometimes the world can make you feel like there’s so much pressure, so much expectation. At the end of the day, it’s a game, it’s a sport and I’m very privileged to be playing out here.

Gauff downs Dolehide in Wimbledon 2024 first round

As had been anticipated, Gauff had little difficulty in navigating her first-round match against Dolehide, the current World No. 51, who she had beaten in two previous meetings. The 2023 US Open champion broke in the very first game and never looked back, losing just one game in the opening set.

Gauff won eight games in a row in the middle of the match, which also put her in total control of the second set. Out of nowhere, Dolehide broke to get on the board and then held serve, but the 20-year-old ended the contest in a little over an hour by winning the last two games.

When is Coco Gauff vs Sonay Kartal?

The Atlanta native will now take on Kartal on Friday (July 5). As of yet, we don’t know what time it will be at nor which court it will be played on, but Kartal made her feelings clear: “Those are the moments you dream of as a little kid. If it is Centre Court, yeah, I’ll be super excited, super proud to be on that court. It’s a really special thing,” she said.

19-year-old Todoni is ranked 142 in the world and is making her Grand Slam debut. The Romanian beat Olga Danilovic of Serbia in straight sets (7-5, 6-1) in the first round.

Gauff has struggled at Wimbledon since making his debut as a 15-year-old in 2019. That year, she reached the fourth round, which remains her best result at The Championships, tied with 2021.

Just 12 months ago, she was defeated by Sofia Kenin, another American, in her first match in the tournament.
