Boxing fans in Mexico and around the world have been counting down the days until they can see superstar Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez back in the ring. The Guadalajara native returns to action on the iconic Cinco de Mayo weekend, as he faces fellow Mexican fighter Jaime Munguía.

Canelo last fought Jermell Charlo in September. He defeated the American via unanimous decision in a convincing performance. His opponent, the former light-middleweight champion, is unbeaten in 43 professional fights. Munguía earned a shot for Canelo’s crown after beating John Ryder via TKO in the ninth round in January. Ryder also tasted defeat to Álvarez, but he avoided a knockout.

Álvarez will defend his WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO titles for the fourth time since he became undisputed champion after defeating Caleb Plant in 2021. Since then, he has defended his undisputed status successfully against Gennady Golovkin, Ryder, and Charlo.

Canelo Álvarez vs Jaime Munguía: prediction

Can Munguía be Canelo’s kryptonite at super middleweight? The Tijuana-bred talent knows all the marbles will be on the line and he will try to do his best to make history and take Canelo’s four belts. He will have the reach advantage over Álvarez and he could capitalize on that, but he likes to engage in punch exchanges and look for the knockout.

Canelo, though, is the more experienced fighter and has more boxing IQ than his opponent. He has proved he can adapt during the fight depending on the needs and has a great counterpunch. If Munguía tries to engage in a war of punches, he could get in trouble, as Álvarez has great reflexes and is one of the best counterpunchers in the business. Prediction: Álvarez by decision.
