To be No. 1 in any sport is an achievement in of itself, but when you consider what’s involved in those that are played individually, it’s a different ball game.

With the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) having made its most recent update to the world rankings, it’s time to take a look at who’s hot, who’s not, and of course who is the No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world right now.

Who is the world No. 1 in women’s tennis?

Though she saw her standing drop briefly after a shock third-round exit in the Australian Open last month, Polish sensation Iga Swiatek is once again No. 1 in women’s tennis. Indeed, the 22-year-old has made a habit of dominating the opposition since her arrival in the upper echelons of the sport. To date, Swiatek has won four Grand Slams: The French Open in 2020, 2022, and 2023, as well as the US Open in 2022. Given her age and stage, it’s highly likely she will be adding to that tally before long if she continues to play the way she has been. Below you can see the most recent update to the top 10 in women’s tennis:

How do tennis rankings work in women’s tennis?

If you didn’t know, women’s tennis world rankings are calculated by the WTA, which then awards points based on a player’s performance at specific tournaments throughout the season. Logically, as a player progresses further in officially sanctioned events, the greater the number of points that are awarded by the association. As you can probably guess, among all the tournaments that are played in a single season, Grand Slams provide players with the largest amount of points at 2000, while runner-ups receive 1200. In terms of shelf life, points collected from each tournament are valid for one year. Where the ranking system itself is concerned, the list is updated on a weekly basis. This is to say, you can expect to see movement within the rankings each week.
