Day 5 of the World Athletics Championships is in the books and four gold medals were handed out on Tuesday night in Euguene, Oregon. The rest of the pack is trying to catch up as United States continue to lead the gold medal and total medal count.
Men’s 400m hurdle the grande finale
Track events were the main ticket at Hayward Field tonight. The action got started with heats of the women’s 400m hurdles, followed by the women’s high jump final. The semis of the women’s 200m started shortly after that before the men took center stage.
The Men’s discus throw final preceded the Men’s 200m semis, and the last two events of the night both had gold medals on the line. The men’s 1500m Final was the appetizer to the men’s 400m hurdle is the grand finale for the night.
Women’s high jump
In Tuesday’s opening medal event is the women’s high jump. It was the Aussie, Elanor Patterson who’s first jump of 6-7½/2.02m gave her the gold over Ukraine’s Yarolslava Mahuchikh who need two jumps gold while Elena Vallortigara finished with the bronze medal.
Men’s Discus Throw Final
The men’s discus thrown was the next event on the medal calendar. Sweden’s Daniel Stahl won gold in Tokyo and was the odds on favorite, but it was Slovenian Kristjan Ćeh who took home the top prize on Tuesday with a championship record 71.13 m.
Men’s 1500m
A trio of of men’s 1500m contenders squared off in the penultimate event of the evening. Norwegian Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigsten, Timothy Cheruiyot who won silver and Josh Kerr who settled for bronze in Tokyo were all in the running, but it was the Englishman Jake Wightman who took gold with a time of 3:29.23.
Men’s 400m
All eyes were on Karsten Warholm in the men’s 400m hurdles after reaching the final despite having pulled his hamstring almost six weeks ago. That hamstring seemed to hold up just fine in the heats and semi, and in the final the Norwegian failed to outdo Alison Dos Santos who not only is a WAC gold medalist but hist 46.29 is a championship record.
