Day 6 of the World Athletics Championship from Eugene, Oregon is in the books and two more gold medals were given out on Wednesday. The United States maintain their stranglehold at the top of the medal count with a total of 19 medals and six golds.

Day 6 was jam packed

There was plenty of action at Hayward Field, starting from early in the afternoon to deep into the evening, but only two of the nine events were finals in which medals would be won.

The men’s and women’s 400m semifinal were one of the main events of the night, along with women’s 400m hurdles and javelin qualifiers. The women’s 5000m heats and the men’s 800m heats were also top draw events.

Feng fights off the rest

The women’s discus throw final was the first of the two medal events on Wednesday. The highlight match up of the event was American, Valarie Allman who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics going up against a strong field that included Croatian Sandra Perkovic. Allman came in as the favorite, but Perkovic had defeated Allman already this year. In the end, China’s Feng Bin shocked the world with her 69.12 meter throw that secured her a place at the top of the podium. Perkovic took silver with a throw of 68.45m, and Allman finished with the bronze after a 68.3m throw.

Kazakstan gets first gold

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase the field was wide open and the gold medal could have gone to any number of athletes. Three Americans were in the running but Emma Coburn, Courtney Freichs, and Courtney Wayment would have to try to take down Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi and Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto who were the only women to post under nine minute times this year. At the end of the night it was Jeruto who took home gold, and her 8:53.02 flirted with a world record. It was the third fastest time ever to set a World Championship record, while Ethiopians Werkuha Getachew and Mekides Abebe won silver and bronze.
