USC quarterback Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first player from his university to win the prize since 2005. The award is the highest individual honor given in college football.

The sophomore bested three other finalists: TCU’s Max Duggan, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, and Georgia’s Stetson Bennett, all of them quarterbacks.

Not-so-small consolation

Despite winning the 45-pound trophy, Williams conceded that his fellow finalists had an enviable advantage over him.

“I may get to be standing up here today, but y’all get to go to the College Football Playoff. Guess you can’t win them all,” he said.

The Trojans QB won the vote by throwing over 250 yards in all but three of the team’s games, completing 66% of his passes for 4,075 yards and 37 touchdowns and four interceptions. On top of that, he rushed for 372 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The last USC player to win the Heisman Trophy was Reggie Bush in 2005, but he is no longer recognized as an official winner by the Heisman Trust.

Williams’ win would have brought USC its eighth award, more than any other school, but since Bush’s win is no longer official, the count stands at seven, tied with Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma for most trophies won.

Landslide victory for Caleb

Voting for the award was carried out by 870 members of the media, 58 Heisman winners, and one nationwide fan vote. Williams won overwhelmingly with 544 first-place votes, almost triple the 188 that his Duggan, his closest rival, received.

Here are the top 10 players according to the votes cast.
