Why do they call Gervonta Davis ‘Tank’? What does the nickname mean?
Davis has become one of the biggest names in boxing today, as his boxing skills and power have proven too much for all of his opponents so far.
It seems that 2024 could be a triumphant year for Gervonta Davis. The Baltimore-born boxer has been inactive since taking Ryan Garcia apart in April last year, but is looking to shake off the ring rust and solidify his place as one of the greatest pound for pound fighters on the planet.
This Saturday, he is facing Frank Martin in Las Vegas, to defend yet again his WBA lightweight title. Davis’ journey in boxing began when he turned pro at 18, after experiencing a challenging childhood in Baltimore, where he first made a name for himself as an amateur.
Gervonta Davis: why is he called ‘Tank’?
Like many boxers who train in boxing gyms or possess unique attributes, Gervonta Davis has acquired a nickname. Davis was given the moniker “Tank” by one of his coaches due to his disproportionately large head compared to his body.
The nickname fits the boxer, as he consistently dominates his opponents with his impressive power and aggressive style. While some fighters change their nicknames based on their in-ring accomplishments, fighting style, or personal preference, Davis’ nickname has remained the same.
On the other hand, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who signed Davis when he began his professional career, is an excellent example of a boxer who changed his nickname over time. Mayweather started his career as “Pretty Boy” but eventually adopted the nicknames “TBE” (The Best Ever) and “Money” due to the vast sums of money he earned throughout his career.
