Will boxing legends Julio Cesar Chavez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in September?

The Mexican great posted on social media a fight poster including both fighters, but will they share the ring next month?

Saul Alvarez will be one of the main attractions for combat sports fans in September, but he might not be alone. Canelo will get into the ring with Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena, in Vegas, but he might have to share the public attention with another Mexican legend, Julio Cesar Chavez, as he could return to boxing action to take on Floyd Matweather Jr. in an exhibition bout.

Chavez is 62 but he keeps in shape and could feature in a non-official matchup with the undefeated American. A fight between two greats in their eras that could sell well enough, given their outstanding careers.

Julio Cesar Chavez vs Floyd Mayweather Jr: will it happen?

Will the two boxing icons meet in a boxing ring or is it just a mocking post from Chavez to have a bit of fun?

Chavez and Mayweather Jr. could well have agreed to an exhibition fight, but the American is facing John Gotti III this weekend and it seems unlikely he will put on the gloves again in just a few weeks.

However, both men know they can still sell and have been in exhibition clashes since they retired. Chavez has been in the ring with Jorge Arce and, more recently, Hector Camacho Junior, in 2021. There hasn’t been any official announcement from any of the sides.

It could also be the result of a social media joke from the former world champion. There has been controversy surrounding Canelo and the UFC, as the boxer and the organization will have to share events in Las Vegas on the 14-15 September weekend, so it could just be a funny post to make fans even more confused, given the amount of action expected by then in ‘Sin City’.

“In my prime, I would have liked to fight Floyd Mayweather. I would have beaten him at 140 pounds”, Chavez said in the past in an interview.

Will Chavez and Mayweather Jr. have that conversation inside the ring or is it just a mocking post from the Obregon native? Only time will tell.
