The prestige associated with winning one of tennis’ Grand Slams is immense as you can imagine, but aside from the lovely trophy and the valid points earned in the world rankings, there is also the money and a whole lot of it. Let’s take a look at just how much.

Wimbledon 2023: The Lay of the Land

The semifinals of this year’s edition offer up a rather interesting prospect on the men’s side, in that we have the possibility of world no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz facing off against world no. 2 and the winner of a record 23 Grand Slams, Novak Djokovic, in the finals of the tournament. Of course, both men have to win their duels with world no. 3 Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner respectively. Where their head-to-head is concerned, the two men have only met once before and that was last year in Madrid. Believe it or not, Alcaraz actually came out on top and in a deciding-set tiebreaker no less, though it was in a best-of-three-sets match. Ultimately, if both men can make it to `the finals, we’re likely in for an epic affair.

On the women’s side of things, the semifinals were played on Thursday evening, meaning we’ve now got our finalists in world No. 6, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, and Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova. The former battled back from a set and 4-2 down to defeat world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, while the latter ended Elina Svitolina’s hope of lifting the spirits of the people of Ukraine during this difficult time. To be clear, Vondrousova is the first unseeded woman to make it to the finals in 60 years.

So, what’s the prize money for singles winners at Wimbledon?

As mentioned before, there is quite a bit of cash involved, but obviously, the question is how much? Typically, the winners of the Singles tournament have been the ones to earn the most. When Novak Djokovic claimed the trophy last year, he also pocketed a not-so-small sum of $2.6 million. For the purpose of clarity, the total purse for Wimbledon 2023 is $58.1 million. The winners of the Singles competition for men and women will each earn $3.1 million, while those who lose to them in the final will get a consolation prize of $1.5 million. Interestingly, one doesn’t have to make it that far to make some money. First-round losers still pocket $77,471.
