Formula is back and we’ve got an intriguing season opener in Bahrain. Aside from the Ramadan-related change in schedule that sees race day falling on a Saturday as opposed to Sunday, it’s worth noting that the campaign’s first race is also taking place a week earlier due to F1 rules which stipulate that there must be a minimum of a week between two races. As a result, there will be two free practice sessions on Thursday and Friday before qualifying kicks off. Interestingly, Saturday’s Grand Prix marks 20 years since the very first Bahrain Grand Prix. Suffice it to say, a lot has changed in that time which brings us to the context of this current moment in the sport.

In one of the most eventful offseasons that we’ve seen in some time, there have been some major changes as well as some shocking developments. Firstly, we’ve got former world champion and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who will soon be wearing red after his seismic switch to Ferrari. With Red Bull still the team to beat and the gap between them and the rest of the pack difficult to read, it’s clear that there is a change afoot. This of course leads to the topic of Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, who recently brought the team into focus for the wrong reasons. Facing allegations of misconduct, it remains unclear how his role going forward will be affected and if so, what effect that will have on the team itself.

Yet, we’ve got to return to the topic of the gap once again. Red Bull has been a dominant force over the last few years with Max Verstappen setting the standard. Frankly, the team looks set to continue that trend, however, it’s clear that some teams have improved. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for example is seemingly happy with testing ahead of Saturday, after calling last year’s session the worst of his career. The SF-24 looks to be a much more consistent car with improved drivability. Indeed, the same can be said over at Mercedes, where George Russell and the soon-to-be departed Hamilton have both spoken to greater happiness with the W15. Now, it’s a question of whether they can deliver on the promise they believe the car has.
