Mercedes faces rising tension as Antonelli vs. Russell battle heats up ahead of Miami GP
“He’s on the right track, just as we expected. Sometimes it’s about encouraging him, other times it’s telling him he needs to improve.”
In Formula 1, your first and fiercest rival is usually the driver sitting 20 feet away on the other side of the garage. And early in this 2026 season, that rivalry is shaping up to be a Mercedes‑exclusive showdown.
The team has swept every Sunday race so far — George Russell winning in Australia, and Kimi Antonelli taking victories in China and Japan — plus Russell’s sprint win in Shanghai. Thanks to that run, Antonelli heads into Miami with a nine‑point lead over his teammate.
But Mercedes now faces a double challenge as F1 returns this weekend in Miami: adapting its dominant W17 to the sport’s updated energy‑management rules, and managing the increasingly delicate balance between its two drivers. Team principal Toto Wolff addressed both issues in comments to F1’s official site.

“Teammates are also their biggest rivals”
Wolff didn’t sugarcoat the reality: “The oddity in Formula 1 is that the two team-mates are also the biggest competitors, and we’ve learned a lot over the last 10-plus years in how to best handle these situations,” he said.
He emphasized that Mercedes has learned a lot over the past decade about handling internal battles — but that “means also letting them race and acknowledging the fact that they race.”
That lesson was earned the hard way. The Rosberg‑Hamilton rivalry remains one of the most explosive in F1 history, punctuated by their infamous collision at Barcelona in 2016 — the same year Rosberg won his lone title before retiring. After that, Valtteri Bottas arrived as a stabilizing force, helping Lewis Hamilton secure four straight championships.
Wolff says those years shaped Mercedes’ philosophy: “The team is always more important than the drivers. We represent Mercedes — one of the most formidable brands in the world. Competing for this team comes with responsibility.” His message to Russell and Antonelli is clear: no one is bigger than the badge.

No designated No. 1 driver — for now
Unlike the Hamilton‑Bottas era, Mercedes currently has no defined first or second driver. Wolff even joked that he’d “prefer to have only one car on track” to avoid internal conflict. Still, he insists he’s not worried about a Rosberg‑Hamilton‑style meltdown: “I think it will never come to that point because our drivers, they’ve been so long in the Mercedes family, that they are part of that mindset and this philosophical approach and the legacy that they represent.”

Antonelli’s rapid rise puts pressure on the team
The breakout of 19‑year‑old Kimi Antonelli is forcing Mercedes to confront tough decisions sooner than expected. Wolff acknowledges that Antonelli is still developing: “Given his age and relative lack of experience, it will take at least a season to fully adapt — and that’s happening. We’re not expecting miracles all year.”
Still, the Italian has delivered standout performances, made fewer mistakes as the season progresses, and benefited from smart strategy calls — sometimes with a little help from safety‑car timing. Wolff says the team’s approach is simple: support him when needed, push him when necessary, and stay the course.
“We just need to continue what we’ve been doing and hope it results in great performances and strong results,” he concluded.
