Matchday 3 of the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League continues on Wednesday 5 October, with matches taking place in groups E, F, G and H

Group E

The opening two group matches will have given FC Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb hope they can qualify for the knockout stages, with both clubs currently ahead of Chelsea. The two meet in Austria tonight.

The big hitters face each other at Stamford Bridge. Despite Chelsea and Milan being regular participants in the competition over the years, they have only ever met twice before, both matches ending in draws in the group stages in 1999-2000.

Group F

RB Leipzig take on Celtic in Germany in a match that could make or break both clubs’ Champions League campaigns. They trail Shakhtar Donetsk by four and three points respectively and will see tonight as an ideal time to make up ground.

The Ukrainians travel to Spain to take on last season’s winners and group leaders Real Madrid, who have made a perfect start to the defence of their trophy. Shakhtar do, however, have previous in the Spanish capital, winning 3-2 in a group stage game at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano in October 2020.

Group G

FC Copenhagen face the unenviable task of trying to stop man of the moment Erling Haaland this midweek. The Norwegian has broken all kinds of records since joining Manchester City and has already netted three times in two Champions League matches this season. This will be the club’s first meeting since a Europa League tie in 2008-09, which City won 4-3 on aggregate.

Sevilla have endured a disastrous start to the new season, sitting just above the relegation zone in LaLiga and bottom of Champions League Group G. Rumours abound that this could be head coach Julen Lopetegui’s last game in charge but a win against Borussia Dortmund would move the Spanish side above the Germans and likely put them right back in the hunt for qualification. The two previous meetings between the teams at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán have produced nine goals.

Group H

Group H is the only group which had two clubs with 100% records after matchday two – Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain. Something has to give in a tasty-looking clash in Lisbon tonight; the winner will be all but guaranteed a place in the last 16.

Juventus and Maccabi Haifa already have some serious ground to make up in the group after two defeats so far. But with the top two meeting, their clash in Turin is the perfect opportunity to do just that. Juve would normally be firm favourite to take the three points but have only won three matches in 10 games in all competitions this season.
