What was once a single match between the league champion and the Copa del Rey winner is now a competition featuring the top four teams from the previous season’s domestic tournaments.

With the format change, the two Copa del Rey finalists and the top two finishers in LaLiga earn a spot in the following year’s Spanish Super Cup. This time, the participants will be Mallorca, Athletic Club, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. If a team qualifies through both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, the next team in the league standings takes their place, potentially making the Super Cup a contest among the top four league finishers.

Spanish Super Cup: four participants

Real Madrid, qualifying as the 2023/24 LaLiga EA Sports champion, and Barcelona, the league runner-up, are the only teams to have participated in every edition since the format changed in 2020.

From the Copa del Rey, Mallorca secured their spot as surprise finalists, marking their first Super Cup appearance since 2004. Athletic Club will also compete after winning the 2023/24 Copa del Rey in a dramatic final against Mallorca, decided in a penalty shootout.

When is the 2025 Spanish Super Cup?

The Spanish Super Cup kicks off on Wednesday, January 8, with the first semifinal. The second semifinal will take place on Thursday, January 9, and the grand final is set for Sunday, January 12, 2025. Notably, there is no third-place match in this tournament; only the semifinals and the final will be played.

Where is the Spanish Super Cup played?

The choice of venue has been one of the most controversial decisions in recent years in Spanish football. The RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) has decided that the Spanish Super Cup will be played in Saudi Arabia at least until 2029.

The 2025 edition is no exception, with the competition set to take place in Jeddah at the King Abdullah Sport City KASC Stadium, known as “Al Jawhara,” which has a capacity of just over 60,000 spectators.
