Real Madrid may not be at their best right now, but that has not stopped rival clubs from circling their players. Just as importantly, it has not softened the club’s stance in the transfer market. Anyone looking to sign a player under contract at the Bernabéu will have to pay up.

That message was made clear in recent talks with a top Italian club, which reached out to gauge the price of Gonzalo García. Real Madrid’s response was firm, placing the striker’s value at around $70 million. That figure would make him the second-most expensive academy product in club history, behind only Álvaro Morata’s $94 million move to Chelsea.

Transfer window heats up across Europe

With the season nearing its conclusion, clubs, coaches, and players are already laying the groundwork for the summer transfer window. Movement is picking up in every direction as teams look to reshape their rosters.

In recent days, representatives from a major Italian side visited Valdebebas to ask about several Real Madrid players. Among them was Gonzalo García, a forward whose role has diminished in recent months but whose appeal on the market remains strong.

Madrid send a clear message

Real Madrid’s response to those inquiries speaks volumes about their broader strategy. The club has no intention of letting players leave on the cheap.

García’s résumé backs up that stance. He finished as the Golden Boot winner at the last Club World Cup and has consistently delivered goals when deployed in his natural position inside the box. He has also proven his competitiveness in both LaLiga and the Champions League.

Dortmund interest falls short

Borussia Dortmund are the latest club to register interest. Reports out of Germany suggest the Bundesliga side would be willing to offer around $35 million, but that figure is well below Madrid’s initial asking price and not enough to open serious negotiations.

A striker away from his natural role

Back in January, several teams explored a move for García, including Como. At the time, Xabi Alonso opted to keep the academy product and instead approved Endrick’s departure. Since then, their trajectories have diverged.

While the Brazilian has grown with increased playing time, García has seen his role shrink.

Production limited by positioning

So far this season, García has made 34 appearances, many of them brief, totaling 1,119 minutes. He has scored six goals, though often while playing away from the penalty area.

Out wide, he has shown effort and work rate, but that role pulls him away from where he is most effective. Inside the box is where García thrives, and where his value is most evident.
