Kylian Mbappé’s incredible scoring record only tells half the story

Ammunition, ammunition and more ammunition... while everyone waits for the dream trophies to arrive, especially LaLiga, but above all, the Champions League. The coveted trophy every soccer player longs for – and even more so in the case of 27 year old Kylian Mbappé. The Frenchman has just claimed the Golden Boot at the recently concluded World Cup after finishing with 10 goals.

That tally puts him level with Gerd Müller (Mexico 1970) and behind only Just Fontaine’s 13 goals at Sweden 1958 and Sándor Kocsis’ 11 at Switzerland 1954.

It is another remarkable milestone for the French striker, who, thanks to those 10 goals, has also become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in just three appearances. In Russia 2018 he scored four times in seven games (an average of 0.57 goals per game). On that occasion he found the net in only three matches: against Peru, Argentina and Croatia in the final.

Four years later, in Qatar, he doubled his tally, going from four goals to eight in seven games (1.14 per game). He scored in four matches, including a hat trick in the final against Argentina. At the World Cup that has just ended, he raised his total again, scoring 10 goals in eight games (an average of 1.25 per game). The only teams he failed to score against were Norway and Spain.

But it was not only his World Cup performances that stood out. Mbappé also finished as the leading scorer in both LaLiga and the Champions League. Individual honors that mean little to a player who left Paris Saint-Germain in search of Champions League glory, only to watch his former teammates lift Europe’s biggest club trophy in consecutive seasons.

Curiously, his goal tally across those three competitions exactly matches his number of appearances: 50 games between LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup, producing 50 goals.

In LaLiga, the Frenchman has already won two top scorer awards. In his first season he scored 31 goals in 34 games (0.91 per game). This past 2025-26 campaign, he finished with 25 goals in 31 appearances (0.81 per game).

In the Champions League, meanwhile, he scored 15 goals in just 11 matches, averaging 1.36 goals per game. Even more striking is that, according to UEFA data, Mbappé registered 30 shots on target and converted 15 of them, meaning one out of every two efforts on goal ended up in the back of the net.

He missed three Champions League games – against Manchester City in the league phase while recovering from injury, against Benfica in the first leg of the knockout playoff, and the first leg of the round of 16, again against City, because of a knee problem. Even so, he failed to score in only four matches: against Juventus, Liverpool, Benfica (in the 1-0 win thanks to Vinícius Jr.’s goal from his assist) and Manchester City (a 2-1 defeat).

Those are numbers that should surprise no one.

Now, though, after the summer break, it is time to switch focus.

It was at the end of April that a social media post hinted at the possibility of José Mourinho returning to the Real Madrid bench. To the surprise of many, the French forward “liked” the post. Mbappé, who had been very close to Xabi Alonso, did not understand the Spaniard’s departure in January. That “like” was interpreted as a sign of how he viewed the Portuguese coach’s possible arrival at Madrid.

And Mourinho will need him at his very best.

The World Cup has once again provided the perfect stage for Mbappé to showcase his extraordinary qualities. Now he simply has to take one more step forward.
