AC Milan - Borussia Dortmund summary: score, goals, highlights | Champions League
AC Milan - Borussia Dortmund as it happened: Dortmund reach last 16
Full time: AC Milan 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
A well-deserved victory for Borussia Dortmund, who survived an early scare to become the first team in Group F to qualify for the round of 16.
Milan started quickly and won an early penalty, but it went mostly downhill for them from then on after Giroud missed from the spot. The Germans immediately went up the other end and were awarded a penalty of their own, with Reus showing the French striker how it’s done from 12 yards.
Erdin Terzic’s men were dangerous on the break, with Bynoe-Gittens especially threatening down the left. However, Chukwueze levelled for the hosts out of nowhere, netting from a seemingly harmless position out on the right a few minutes before half time.
That gave the Italians hope going into the second half but the reality is that they never got going. Dortmund’s passing was sharper and more incisive, with a well-worked move ending with Bynoe-Gittens restoring their lead just before the hour-mark.
And the visitors wasted little time in extending their advantage, although Maignan will feel he should’ve kept out Adeyemi’s strike from the edge of the box.
Dortmund would’ve expected a Milan rally in the final 20 minutes but it never came, with a speculative header from Jovic, which came off the outside of the post, the closest the Rossoneri came to threatening a comeback.

We'll be back with more Champions League action for you tomorrow as Real Madrid host Napoli in the Spanish capital. You wouldn't want to miss that one, would you?
Barcelona join Dortmund in the round of 16
As well as Dortmund, Barcelona have also booked their spot in the round of 16 for the first time since 2020-21. Atlético Madrid and Lazio have qualified with a match to spare too.
How can Milan qualify for the round of 16?
Glad you asked. Stefano Pioli's side need to win away to Newcastle and hope Dortmund beat PSG. On the evidence of today, I can't seem them doing their bit...
How the Group F table looks after matchday five
This make pretty reading for fans of Dortmund, who are through to the round of 16 with a game to spare. Who will join them? Well, it's anyone's guess...
Newcastle host AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund face PSG in Germany on matchday six.
group F | T | MP | W | D | L |

1 | 10 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
2 | 7 | 5 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
3 | 5 | 5 | 1 | 2 | 2 |

Mbappé drama in PSG vs Newcastle!
In the other game in the group, Kylian Mbappé equalised for PSG in the 98th minute after VAR awarded the French side a penalty against Newcastle! How big could that be come the end of the group stage?
Full time: AC Milan 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
A well-deserved win for Dortmund against a poor Milan side. The Germans have survived the "Group of Death" and are in the round of 16!
Sabitzer almost grabs a late fourth, shooting narrowly past the post!
No stress for Dortmund here...
It looks as if Milan will at least still be in with a chance of qualification on matchday six with PSG losing to Newcastle.
Dortmund are back to taking the sting out of the game after that brief Milan flurry.
Kobel saves from Jovic!
Loftus-Cheek gets to the goal line and cuts the ball back for Jovic, who first time effort is parried by Kobel!
Tomori wins possession in his own half and is literally waving his teammates forward. Could've done with that a bit earlier, I think...
Six minutes to be added on.
A moment of promise for the hosts as Loftus-Cheek finds space in the box but his ball across the face of goal finds no takers.
Füllkrug almost breaks the bar in half!
Absolutely fantastic play from Adeyemi on the left, who skips round two Milan players and picks out Füllkrug, who smashes the ball as hard as he can against the crossbar!
That Jovic header aside, Dortmund are keeping the ball really well and limiting Milan to almost nothing.
Jovic header hits the post!
Almost a goal out of nowhere for Milan! Calabria's cross from the right looks to be well behind Jovic, who does brilliantly to twist and direct a header off the post!
Füllkrug heads just over!
He's hardly been involved but Füllkrug almost gets a fourth! His first sight of goal but his header is too high and floats behind for a goal kick.
Good from Pulisic as he whips the ball across the face of goal, forcing Kobel into action before a red and black jersey can get on the end of ti!
Pulisic's delivery finds the head of Tomori, who can't keep his effort down.
Pulisic wins a corner although he really should've stuck the ball in the box earlier. What can Milan do here?
Right, Milan. What have you got? Just over 10 minutes to go.
Brandt replaces Reus for the Germans.
I can see another Dortmund goal coming before a Milan one...
Chukwueze's last action of the game. The Nigerian and Adli go off, with Jovic and Traoré coming on.
Chukwueze gets past Adeyemi down the right but is then faced with two more yellow jerseys as he tries to break into the box. No way through.
Absolutely no urgency from the Italians, which is bizarre. They've been seriously lacking ideas throughout.
Still 1-0 to Newcastle away to PSG. If the French side are able to turn that around, they and Dortmund will be through.
This is not looking good for Milan, who've been really disappointing.
The French goalkeeper thought he'd got back in time to claw it out, but goal-line technology confirmed the ball had crossed the line.
Dortmund have men over on the left, who of whom is Adeyemi. He comes inside and shoots, with Maignan making a mess of it as it just bounces over the line!
Giroud is still with us! The striker gets his head on a cross from the right but can only divert the ball into the grateful arms of Kobel.
Tomori is first in the book after some handbags in the box at a Milan corner (which comes to nothing).
Milan will be happy with this...
Bynoe-Gittens is off, replaced by Wolf.
Bynoe-Gittens is again a threat down the left but his low cross is well claimed by Maignan.
Dortmund look to be growing in confidence. There's a bit more zip about their passing now. This is going to be an uphill battle for Milan.
What do Milan do now? What they're doing isn't really working. We've hardly seen anything of Giroud since he missed that penalty...
That's all down to a delightful touch from Füllkrug, who's not really been in this game. The striker deftly finds Sabitzer, whose short pass allows Bynoe-Gittens to shoot first time low into the net!
A big chance wasted for Milan! Loftus-Cheek races away down the left and has two teammates in the middle but overruns the ball in the box, allowing Hummels to get across to avert the danger!
Adeyemi and Ozcan on for Malen and Schlotterbeck for the visitors.
Schlotterbeck, who was a doubt for the game, looks as if he'll have to go off too after going down all alone.
Dortmund have stemmed the flow of Milan attacks, even-steven in the last few minutes.
Krunic replaces the stricken Thiaw. Bad luck.
Oh no. Malick Thiaw is going to have to go off here after feeling his hamstring go ping. He did well to keep up with Bynoe-Gittens but paid the price for it.
That could have been a Pulisic wondergoal! Calabria's crosses flips up in the air and the attacker goes for a bicycle kick, which he looks to connect well with. It appears to be goalbound but is blocked by a yellow shirt!
Much better defending this time from Dortmund as Chukwueze tries to dance his way between two players, just as he did for the goal. No way through.
As was the case in the first half, a bright start from the hosts, who immediately go on the attack.
Second half underway in Milan!
The boys are back out there, let's go!
We also have live coverage of a second game today, by the way. My esteemed colleague Joe is casting an eye over Barcelona's home game against Porto, which is also all square at half time.
Remember to keep this page open too!
Tuesday's half-time Champions League scores
As well as Newcastle leading at PSG, Manchester City are surprisingly losing at home to RB Leipzig (with a strong team out, Haaland and all).
Pep Guardiola's team are in crisis (that's tongue-in-cheek, by the way...)!
Half time: AC Milan 1-1 Borussia Dortmund
A tale of two penalties in the opening stages, as Giroud spurned an immediate chance to put Milan in the driving seat from the spot. Minutes later, the Frenchman and his team were punished, Reus showing him how it’s done from 12 yards.
The hosts had most of the ball but it was the Germans who were more dangerous on the counterattack, with Bynoe-Gittens especially dangerous down the left.
Further clear-cut chances were few and far between at either end, however, until Chukwueze created something out of nothing from a seemingly unthreatening position out on the right a few minutes before half time.
All to play for in the second half!
Chukwueze levels for Milan
A great goal or terrible defending? As ever, it's probably somewhere in the middle. The winger did well to wriggle between defenders, who will feel they should've shut him out.
Reus penalty puts Dortmund ahead
A tale of two penalties early on, as Giroud's is saved by Kobel and Reus converts minutes later!
Half time: AC Milan 1-1 Borussia Dortmund
All square at the break at San Siro!
Calabria heads just wide!
The last chance is Milan's! Pulisic drifts a superb cross to the back post and Calabria's downward header bounces across goal and just wide!
Dortmund finishing the half on the front foot, can they create one final chance?
Three extra minutes to come.
Chukwueze layoff is incredibly inviting for Adli but his shot from a promising position is blocked before it reaches Kobel's goal.
Interesting...shall we say...from Reijnders, who backheels the ball out of trouble on his own goal line. It ended up looking fantastic as it went to a teammate, but that could've gone horribly wrong...
And just like that, everything is back up in the air in Group F.
It's a brilliant goal from the Nigerian, who looks to be going nowhere out on the right flank, gets between two defenders, comes inside and shoots low into the far corner! Perhaps not the best defending, admittedly...
Newcastle lead PSG in Paris
Good news for Milan in the other game, at least, as Newcastle are 1-0 up on PSG in Paris. A win for the French and German teams would send the Italians and English packing.
This time it's Calabria who has to keep his wits about him as Malen tries a big switch of play, with both Reus and Bynoe-Gittens bearing down on the defender. The Milan man does well to guide the ball make to Maignan.
Speaking or lovely, Hernández curls a beautiful cross into the box which Kobel does just about enough to claim ahead of Chukwueze. The Dortmund keeper looks to be hurt, though.
Lovely, lovely feet from Reijnders to spin into space inside the Dortmund half. His pass, however, goes to a yellow shirt, rendering his loveliness pointless.
Tomori had to stay strong there and he did, which was just as well for Milan. Malen almost gets in behind again but the defender is able to hold him off.
Ryerson shot blocked!
A second looked imminent there for the visitors! Ryerson is all alone at the back post but Hernández scampers across to get a block in just in the nick of time!
Another corner for Milan as Pulisic and then Calabria loft crosses into the box. A couple of decent balls in but no takers in the middle.
Dortmund are causing problems on the break! It's Malen who gets in behind this time and Maignan has to get down to cut out his low cross into the six-yard box.
Pulisic tests Kobel!
The USMNT captain shoots low from the edge of the box but it's a relatively easy stop for Kobel. I'm not sure it was even going in, in fact.
Milan force a couple of corners, with the second one coming after some serious flapping from Kobel, which won't have inspired confidence in the Dortmund defence. Nothing comes of either of them, though.
Ooooh, Giroud's eyes lit up at Hernández's cross down the other end, but Schlotterbeck just got enough on it to flick it away!
Bynoe-Gittens shoots just over!
That was almost 2-0! Bynoe-Gittens torments Calabria once again and cuts inside before shooting narrowly over!
Whistled ring round San Siro as Dortmund enjoy their first sustained spell of possession.
Dortmund are happy to let Milan have the ball, as they have been since the first whistle. That penalty aside, there's not been much of a threat from the hosts.
I can confirm he is not, in fact, Italian, but Romanian-Hungarian. Here's Calum's profile of today's match official István Kovács. Let's hope he stays out of the way from now on...
Pulisic tackled...by the referee
The match official needs to write his own name in his book after obstructing Pulisic as he broke towards goal. Don't think he's Italian...?
A second Dortmund attack and almost a second chance! Bynoe-Gittens races away but just overhits his final pass to Füllkrug.
Pulisic very nearly gets in behind as Milan play the ball over the top of the Dortmund defence.
It had been all Milan up until that point, too. Soccer, eh?
Right in the side netting. Textbook! As it stands, Dortmund are going through...
What a start to this game...
Calabria chops down Bynoe-Gittens and that's another stonewaller!
PENALTY FOR DORTMUND!
Their first attack!
How costly could that prove to be for Milan? Well, we'll find out soon enough...
Far too casual from the big Frenchman and Kobel makes an easy stop down to his right.
GIROUD MISSES THE PENALTY!
Oh, mon Dieu...
Yes, clear handball from Schlotterbeck and it's happening!
Penalty for Milan! Handball!
Will VAR see it that way...?
Ahhhh, close for Milan! Calabria whips a low cross across the face of goal and Giroud just misses it!
Three minutes in and Dortmund have barely had a kick. They're keeping a sound defensive shape, though.
The other game in the group, by the way, is PSG at home to Newcastle. I'll keep you posted of how that one's going too.
Early possession for Milan, although no ventures into the Dortmund box so far.
Underway in Milan!
Away we go! Let's do this!
Ready? Kick off incoming...
The fans in Milan absolutely love shouting "the CHAAAAAAMPIOOOOOOOOONS" at the end of the anthem in unison more than anywhere else. Wow.
Champions League anthem time
The teams are out, the Champions League anthem is about to hit!

Just in case you missed it a little earlier (or didn't remember), USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah isn't playing for AC Milan tonight. Here's Will to explain why not.
But fear not, Stars and Stripes fans! Christian Pulisic does start for the Italians, while Gio Reyna will be hoping to make an impact from the bench for Dortmund.
AC Milan - Borussia Dortmund: overall head-to-head record
The teams’ first European meeting came all the way back in 1957-58, just the third ever season of the European Cup. Milan won 5-2 on aggregate in the quarter-finals and went on to reached the final, where they lost to Real Madrid (obviously).
They then had to wait more than 40 years to play each other again, when their paths crossed in two consecutive seasons. The Germans won the 2001-02 UEFA Cup semi-final 5-3 over two legs but were defeated in the final by Feyenoord, before the teams traded 1-0 away victories in the second group stage of the 2002-03 Champions League, which Milan won.
Overall

AC Milan wins - 3
Borussia Dortmund wins - 2

Kick off fast approaching at San Siro!
I hope you're sitting comfortably. Strap yourselves in, this is going to be a cracker (he says, tempting fate...)!
Dortmund coach Edin Terzic: "We cannot afford mistakes"
"We know that we cannot afford to make many mistakes against such an opponent tomorrow. We'll prepare for that. This is a big, important stadium, and we are lucky to have the chance to play here. We know that we have to be ready to go from the very start."
Milan coach Stefano Pioli: "Dortmund game almost decisive"
"We must repeat our home performance against Paris [in which they won 2-1]. We played a very high level match. We had confidence and a willingness to suffer, components that will also be needed tomorrow. It will be an important, almost decisive, encounter."
Borussia Dortmund in the 2023-24 Champions League
19 September: PSG 3-0 Dortmund
4 October: Dortmund 0-0 AC Milan
25 October: Newcastle 0-1 Dortmund
7 November: Dortmund 2-0 Newcastle
Dortmund can qualify for the round of 16
As I mentioned a little earlier, the task for Dortmund is simple - win in Milan and they're through to the round of 16. The situation is less critical for them, however, as they will have a chance of qualifying on matchday six no matter what happens at San Siro.
AC Milan in the 2023-24 Champions League
19 September: AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
4 October: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 AC Milan
25 October: PSG 3-0 AC Milan
7 November: AC Milan 2-1 PSG
How could Milan be eliminated from the Champions League?
Serious business here for Milan, who know that a defeat against Dortmund could spell disaster. If the Germans win and PSG beat Newcastle, that'll be goodnight Milano.
Borussia Dortmund: the 2023-24 season so far
Dortmund came agonisingly close to winning the Bundesliga last season, somehow managing to throw it away on the last weekend. It doesn't look like they'll be mounting another title challenge this year, with Xabi Alonso's rejuvenated Bayer Leverkusen setting a relentless pace at the top of the table. BVB are already 10 points behind the leaders and eight adrift of second-placed Bayern Munich. Just one win in four league matches has seen them fall behind at the summit.
But they are top of the tree in Champions League Group F, twice beating Newcastle and drawing the first game against Milan after losing the opener to PSG.
AC Milan: the 2023-24 season so far
Milan haven't been in great form in recent weeks, winning only two of their last seven games in all competitions. But they brought a four-game winless league run to an end against Fiorentina at the weekend and are in third spot in Serie A, six points behind leaders Inter. Stefano Pioli's men won seven of their first eight league fixtures, although the other saw them thrashed 5-1 by their city rivals.
It's been a mixed bag in the Champions League, with two 0-0 draws followed by a loss and then a win against Paris Saint-Germain.
How has USMNT captain Christian Pulisic been doing with AC Milan?
"Captain America" has fared rather better than compatriot Reyna this season, starting 13 matches in all competitions, including three in the Champions League. The former Dortmund attacker has scored four times in Serie A but is still on the hunt for his first European goal for the club he joined in the summer from Chelsea.
(Come on Christian, I've set it up perfectly for you, don't let me down)
Milan team to play Dortmund: Pulisic starts
There is some good news for USMNT fans, though! Christian Pulisic will play from the off and is expected to line up in his favoured position on the left of the attack.
Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Theo Hernández; Loftus-Cheek, Reijnders; Chukwueze, Adli, Pulisic; Giroud.
How has Gio Reyna been doing with Borussia Dortmund?
USMNT star Reyna will hope to make an impact from the bench at San Siro, with the fact he isn't in the starting line-up not coming as a huge surprise. The 21-year-old missed the start of the season with a foot injury and hasn't been able to get a regular run in the Dortmund team since then, starting only one match and coming off the bench five times since returning to action in September. He has played only 11 minutes in the Champions League, in the latter stages of the win away to Newcastle.
Dortmund team to play Milan: Gio Reyna misses out
Right on cue! Schlotterbeck and Sabitzer have both been passed fit to play and start for the Germans. There's no Gio Reyna, however, although he is on the bench...
Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Sabitzer, Emre Can; Malen, Reus, Bynoe-Gittens; Füllkrug
Early Borussia Dortmund squad news: Nmecha ruled out, Schlotterbeck doubtful
A number of Dortmund players have been struck by both injury and illness in the last week or so. Midfielder Felix Nmecha (hip) and central defender Nikas Süle (ill) have both been ruled out, while fellow German internationals Nico Schlotterbeck and Karim Adeyemi, as well as striker Sébastian Haller, have all been hit by a bug. It is hoped, however, the trio will be available, with the same going for midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, who picked up a thigh injury in the weekend win over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Milan - Dortmund: the calm before the storm
Another standard social media post to add to my own personal list of "soccer clubs' obligatory pre-match social media posts". Along with videos of the players arriving and the dressing room before the game, a photo of an empty stadium with the caption "the calm before the storm" is a must.
Box ticked, Milan!
Early AC Milan squad news: Rafael Leão out due to injury
Perhaps the biggest blow for Milan boss Stefano Pioli is Rafael Leão’s absence. The Portuguese winger is one of the Italians’ most dangerous weapons but suffered a thigh injury before the November international break and still isn’t ready to return.
Swiss international Noah Okafor is another attacking absentee, while defenders Pierre Kalulu, Marco Pellegrino and Mattia Caldara are long-term injury victims.
Veteran centre-back Simon Kjaer hasn’t played since the matchday three defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Paris and again looks set to miss out.
Early AC Milan squad news: USMNT midfielder Musah suspended
Milan will be without one half of their USMNT duo for today’s game as Yunus Musah is suspended after receiving three yellow cards in the first four group games. Bad boy.
The midfielder has been in and out of the starting line-up in the first few months of the season, starting nine of and coming off the bench in six of the Rossoneri’s first 17 matches of the campaign.

Which teams have already qualified for the Champions League round of 16?
Who said the Champions League group stage was difficult? Six teams booked their places in the round of 16 with two matches to spare and now *only* have to try to finish top of their respective groups.
- Real Sociedad
- Real Madrid
- Inter
- Manchester City
- RB Leipzig
- Bayern Munich
Now, I don't know how good you are a maths, but I've always been more of a linguist. Anyway, that doesn't matter as Andy is here to explain all the permutations you could possibly need to know for Group F heading into matchdays five and six.
As far as today's game goes, one thing is clear - if Borussia Dortmund win at San Siro, they will be through to the knockout stage.
How the Champions League Group F table looks
Has this year's "Group of Death" lived up to its billing so far? The best is probably still to come, with just three points separating top from bottom going into the last two matches. That means it's anyone's guess as to who will qualify for the round of 16.
How exciting!
group F | T | MP | W | D | L |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 7 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
2 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
3 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
4 | 4 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
San Siro set for Champions League drama?
I might be jumping the gun and also tempting fate a bit with that "drama" comment, but Group F is just perfectly set up for it on the last two matchdays. And what better place for some to play out that at San Siro in Milan, truly one of world soccer's most iconic stadiums?
What a place!
What time does AC Milan - Borussia Dortmund kick off?
We’ll all have to wait just a little though, as the clash in Italy gets underway at 9:00 p.m. local time, which is 3:00 p.m. ET and 12:00 p.m. PT. Let’s hope you’ve decided to work from home today (those of you who can)…
Over the next 90 minutes or so I’ll be bringing you build-up, team news and plenty more. Let's do this!
Hello and welcome to AC Milan - Borussia Dortmund!
Matchday five of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League group stage is upon and, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, welcome to the Group of Death! It’s anyone’s guess as to which two of AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United will make it out of Group F alive, although we might have a clearer picture in a few hours’ time.
I’m Roddy and thanks for joining me as USMNT duo Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna (potentially) go head-to-head as Milan face Dortmund at San Siro!
