In January, Edson Álvarez was once again close to the Premier League.

A few months ago, Chelsea pushed hard for the Mexican international’s services, and now it has been reported that Arsenal had the Ajax midfielder on their radar during the mid-season transfer window.

According to the transfer-market specialist Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners looked at Álvarez and Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi as potential signings, before deciding to bring in Jorginho from Chelsea.

Long contract at Ajax

Any team that wants to prise Álvarez from Ajax’s clutches will have to dig deep. The former Club América player is under contract in Amsterdam until July 2025, having renewed his contract in 2021.

The transfer-value website Transfermarkt has estimated the 25-year-old’s market worth at €35 million euros. That makes him the second-most valuable player in the Ajax squad, behind centre-back Jurrien Timber, whose projected price tag stands at €45 million.
