Erik Ten Hag - helped by the absences of Rasmus Hojlund and Antony - gave Alejandro Garnacho a chance for Manchester United’s return after the international break. Garnacho was not called up by Lionel Scaloni for the South American World Cup qualifiers, however, the Argentine winger stepped up in the Premier League match against Everton on Sunday.

Inspired by Ronaldo

Garnacho turned the game on its head in the second minute at Goodison Park. The Argentinian caught Diogo Dalot’s cross mid-air to fire Manchester United ahead with a spectacular bicycle kick. His goal was reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s against Manchester City and Cristiano Ronaldo’s in Turin. As if that wasn’t enough, Garnacho celebrated the goal in the same way as his idol Ronaldo as he stunned the home faithful with the sensational strike.

Garnacho’s chance

United’s No. 17 was incisive down the left flank, even forcing a booking from Ashley Young. Garnacho’s goal was his second of the season, his first in the Premier League and if he continues to progress in the goalscoring department, his game time could increase significantly, as all of Ten Hag’s strikers are struggling to score in the Premier League.

Rashford is the club’s top scorer in the league with two goals, Anthony Martial has one and Hojlund, Antony, Facundo Pellistri and Jadon Sancho (currently sidelined) have not yet scored.

The Argentinian is gaining more prominence under Ten Hag. Proof of this is the number of games played compared to last season. As of November, Garnacho has already started as many games in the Premier League as he did in the whole of last season. He has played 474 minutes, while last year he played 561 minutes in all 38 league matches. In the Champions League, he has played in all four of the club’s games.

It is now up to the young winger to continue firing for a Manchester United team that is in dire need of goals.
