Update:

Lamine Yamal has quickly become a household name, and one of the world’s best players, since making his first-team breakthrough with both Barcelona and Spain as a 16-year-old in 2023. But just how familiar are soccer fans with that name?

For many, the assumption is that Lamine Yamal follows a naming convention standard in many parts of the world, where “Lamine” is his first name and “Yamal” is his surname. That, though, is not the case.

Spanish naming conventions

Spanish naming conventions typically use two surnames. In most cases, after a person’s first name or names, their father’s first surname comes first, followed by their mother’s first surname.

New Real Madrid signing Marc Cucurella’s full name, for instance, is Marc Cucurella Saseta, with “Cucurella” being his father’s first surname and “Saseta” his mother’s.

Lamine Yamal does follow that custom, but there is a good chance you have never heard either of his two surnames.

Why Lamine Yamal wears both names on his jersey

Born to a Moroccan father and a mother from Equatorial Guinea, the Barcelona attacker was born in Catalonia and follows Spanish naming conventions as a result. However, “Yamal” is not his surname, which is part of the reason he often has both “Lamine” and “Yamal” on his jersey.

The teenager’s full name is Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana, with “Nasraoui” being his father’s surname and “Ebana” his mother’s.

The meaning behind Lamine Yamal

According to Tribuna, the player has a compound first name and was named after two people, one called “Lamine,” which means “the trustworthy” in Arabic, and another called “Yamal,” which translates to “beauty,” who helped his parents financially and emotionally before he was born.

It is a touching tribute to those who played a crucial background role in bringing Lamine Yamal, the player we know today as one of the planet’s greatest talents, into the world in the first place.
