It’s been a busy few months for Álvaro Fidalgo. First of all there was the speculation that he could leave América, followed by the ongoing subject of his naturalization - a move that would pave the way for him to play for Mexico. The latter, the most popular with the public in view of the latest results that Jaime Lozano’s team have delivered.

On the topic of representing El Tri one day, the Azulcrema player made it clear that although it is not an issue that is on his mind at this precise moment, but nor does he rule it out either. As far as he is concerned right now, there is no way of knowing what may happen in the future.

Mexico or Spain?

Right now all I am thinking about is América and nothing else, I don’t think beyond that. The truth is that the doors are never closed to anything (playing for Mexico’s national Team), neither to one thing nor to another, but I’m not thinking about it either. It’s not that I have considered saying: ‘No, if I can’t do it here, I’ll play there (Mexico instead of Spain), but right now I just don’t know,” he told Fox Sports.

Avoiding controversy

“Everything I say is going to generate controversy, I don’t want to say anything,” the player continued. “I don’t like to talk about the future because you never know and the only thing I can do is be the best version of myself in the present. Time will tell what happens. I want to continue growing and that’s all. I don’t think about anything else”.

Moving on to other issues, El Maguito also spoke about the Coapa team’s recent performances, including outstanding displays in both Liga MX and the CONCACAF Champions League. Fidalgo is aware of the excitement among fans at the prospect of winning the double: “After winning the Concacaf quarter finals 0-4, and practically being league leaders, people can see how serious we are,” he explained.

“They see that every game we have we are going to win and I think that is why people identify with this América side. I think this is the time when I see the fans and the group most connected, and I think that is very important for everyone. They make me grow every day, because you feel so good playing with the club. I am counting the days until our next game,” he concluded.

América currently second in the Liga MX table, level on 29 points with their next rivals, Toluca. The two teams meet at the Azteca on Saturday with the chance of becoming outright leaders. After that, the Azulcremas face Pumas and Puebla to complete the regular phase of the tournament.
