América became first team to score more than 10 goals in the play-offs since 2010
The capital-based team outclassed Puebla FC in the quarter-final 11-2 on aggregate to secure their spot in the next round.
Club América made a clear statement during the quarter-final against Puebla as to why they are the team to beat in this tournament. The Eagles defeated ‘Los Camoteros’ 11-2 on aggregate and became the first team to score more than ten goals in a playoff series since 2010.
The last time a team reached double digits was Santos Laguna when they defeated Monarcas Morelia 10-4 on aggregate. In that playoff game, Oribe Peralta scored four goals to give ‘Los Laguneros’ the ticket to the final of the 2010 Bicentenario campaign, only to lose in the final against Toluca in penalties.
América outclass Puebla
The Eagles are on the road to win their 15th Liga MX title in franchise history, and Henry Martín has been in peak form all tournament. Mexico International scored three goals in two games against Puebla, while Alejandro Zendejas, Miguel Layún, Roger Martínez and Brian Rodríguez found the back of the net in the 11 goals that América scored in the series.
What is next for América?
Club América will face Toluca in the semifinal this week, with the first leg being played at Estadio Nemesio Díez on 19 October. The second leg will take place on Saturday at Estadio Azteca, and the winning team will face off against the winner of the other semifinal between Monterrey and Pachuca.
