The final days of the Liga MX transfer market are upon us with trading due to be concluded on Wednesday 13 September - just before the Apertura Week 8 fixtures. Several clubs are working overtime to close their squads before deadline day, including América who hope to add a central defender to their roster. After considering a number of options, the club have settled on Gonzalo Piovi, who is currently on the books at Racing Club Avellaneda.

According to market specialist César Merlo, América have already presented a formal offer for the 29-year-old Argentine defender. The Águilas’ have offered Racing $4.5 million dollars for Piovi, a figure below the Argentine club’s asking price of six million...

América have just a few days to come back with a second offer. The Mexicans are keen to toughen up at the back, where they have conceded eight goals in six games and see Pioivi as the perfect fit. Coach André Jardine has long been aware that the defence is an issue but not been able to fix it before the tournament resumed three weeks ago.
