Álvaro Fidalgo has made a name for himself in the Liga MX during the past couple of years. The former Real Madrid youth player has continued his developed since his arrival at América in 2021 - and that hasn’t gone unnoticed back in Europe where several clubs were interested in bringing him back to the old continent last summer. But the Spaniard chose not to leave after having been so close to making the Clausura 2023 final with Las Águilas.

Offer comes in

“This summer, there were offers from Spanish LaLiga clubs, including a club in the Europa League,” Fidalgo revealed in an interview with Canal Fáez FC. “But in the end, the offer was for an amount which didn’t meet my club’s expectations”.

The 26-year-old midfielder went on to add that he has no intention of leaving América with whom he wants to win the championships - especially after coming so close last time around. He explained that he did not want to give up at the first opportunity after losing the semi-finals against Chivas - a game in which he was sent off. “Leaving after the first setback with América wouldn’t have been the right thing to do because this club really gave me everything. I am grateful for all the affection they have shown me during these past two and a half years - they changed my life, they took a big gamble on me and renewed my contract just six or seven months ago, so I owe it to them,” he said.

Fidalgo recalls red card against Chivas

Fidalgo’s sending off in the second leg of the semi-final against Chivas ended up being one of the key factors behind the Rojiblancos’s turnaround at the Azteca. Months after that episode, the midfielder reveals the difficult moments he went through. “The expulsion was a very crazy moment for everyone. You see yourself playing in the final then suddenly you are in the locker room watching the game on television and you don’t understand why. I couldn’t sleep afterwards,” he recalled.
