América, Tigres, Cruz Azul and Monterrey, the teams that have scored the most points in the last decade
Between 2002 and 2012, the data presents a surprising number revelations in the amount of points scored by the top teams in Liga MX.
On the eve of a new championship with the Clausura 2023 in Mexico fast approaching, it is without a doubt an interesting experiment to see which teams have set the tone over the last ten years. There we find that in the 2022 Apertura period, starting from 2012, América are the team that set the pace with 632 points, followed by Tigres with 583 points, as well as Cruz Azul and Monterrey with 550 each.
After these four teams with the most points from Apertura 2012 to Apertura 2022, we find León with 545 points, Toluca with 525 points, Pachuca with 507 points, then Pumas with 469 points and finally Chivas with 455.
Obviously, in the end, what counts are the titles they have managed to win and in this area, it is the UANL Tigres that dominate this period of Liga MX with the Clausura 2019, Apertura 2017, Apertura 2016 and Apertura 2015, followed by León with three championships (the Esmeraldas won them in the Apertura 2020, Clausura 2014 and Apertura 2013), and América, who won the Apertura 2018, Apertura 2014 and Clausura 2013, the latter in a memorable final against Cruz Azul).
After them comes Pachuca with two titles in the Apertura 2022 and the Clausura 2016, before Cruz Azul finally appear with a title in the Clausura 2021 that broke a 22-year drought without championships. Chivas also have a win: their title in the Clausura 2020 campaign.
Within these eight teams, it is surprising that neither Pumas nor Toluca have managed to win the top prize, especially since the scarlets are among the six teams with the most points.
In turn, the teams that have scored the most points in a tournament in these ten years have been Cruz Azul with 41 during the Clausura 2021, the compeition where they ended up being crowned champions, as well as León with the same number of points in the Clausura 2019, followed by América and Pachuca with 38 points.
The Águilas got their tally during the Apertura 2022 and the Clausura 2021, while the Tuzos did it in the Clausura 2022, where Atlas snatched the championship from them.
