América win in Querétaro and lead the way in Apertura 2023
The Águilas were in action at La Corregidora Stadium as they faced the home side in the rearranged Apertura matchday 2 league game.
América travelled to Querétaro in the rearranged Liga MX Apertura 2023 matchday two game aware that a win would propel the CDMX side top of the table.
The home side had other ideas and Gallos Blancos took the lead through José Zúñiga in the 11th minute. Mauro Genk’s side were anxious to deliver a shock and secure three valuable points in their quest to secure a playoff place and managed to keep the visitors at bay for the first half.
Shortly after the restart, Diego Valdés in the 52nd minute secured the equaliser for America and just before the 80 minute mark, new signing Igor Lichnovsky silenced the home fans heading home the winner. After a lengthy VAR intervention in the build-up to the winning goals due to a possible foul, the goals was awarded and America managed to ride out late Gallos Blancos pressure.
Club América now move to 17 points in the 2023 Apertura table edging San Luis to second place with surprise package Juárez third with 15 points as the tournament edges towards the midway point.
America are the form team in Mexico at present and remain unbeaten following their opening day loss at home to Puebla.
América will face Toluca at the Nemesio Díez Stadium this weekend, while Querétaro visits the Azteca Stadium to face Cruz Azul.
