América’s poor home record at the Azteca
The Águilas have won just three games out of the seven they have played at home in the Clausura 2023.
América’s home form at the Azteca during the Clausura 2023 has left a lot to be desired. Of the seven games that the team have played at their own stadium in the current tournament, they have won just three. Last weekend, Fernando Ortiz’s team showed once again that they are struggling to close games in front of their own fans as they were held to a 2-2 draw to León.
It was the fourth time during the tournament that Ortiz’s team have dropped points after conceding an equaliser in the final part of the match. In a crazy match against León at the Azteca, América was 2-1 up until Joel Campbell equalised four minutes into stoppage-time. The Águilas’ balance at home in the Clausura 2023 is: three wins, three draws and one defeat. In terms of productivity, they have taken just 12 out of of a possible 21 points from games played at the Colossus of Santa de Úrsula.
And beyond the numbers, América have generally suffered to win matches at the Azteca. Apart from the 6-0 victory against Mazatlán in Week 4, the team has struggled to grind out a result. Against Necaxa, Ortiz’s team had no choice but to finish the game with a five-man defence to preserve their 2-1 lead and against Xolos they also suffered towards the end of the match, winning by a similar, slim margin.
In the other games, América have missed the opportunity to win at home. On Matchday 1, they drew 0-0 with Querétaro, while on Matchday 3 they scraped a 2-2 draw against Puebla after conceding late in the match. So far, the worst match for the Águlias in the tournament was the 0-3 defeat they suffered against Pachuca, which provoked fury from the fans.
Finally, in Week 13, following two away wins, the Coapa team once again disappointed in front of their fans - denied victory right at the death by León.

What next?
América is struggling to secure direct qualification to the Liguilla and has a complicated run-in. As the regular season reaches its climax, the Águilas will play Monterrey, Cruz Azul, Pumas and FC Juárez, although the good news for the Azulcremas is that of those four games, three of them will be at home - their only road trip from now until the regular season is concluded is the Clásico Joven against Cruz Azul in a fortnight’s time.
